It's the same for our pets. We don't want to be wasteful or harm the planet: biodegradable poop bags, sustainable protein sources in their food, and toys made from recycled plastic.
Have you thought about your pet's joint health supplement?
When choosing a supplement for your dog or cat, being aware of the brand’s standpoint on sustainability and ethics is important in your decision-making process. Where are the ingredients from, and what environmental impacts are these products having on the planet?
Here at Antinol, we want to minimise our environmental impact for you, your furry friend, and the planet.
Check out 6 ways Antinol is an ethical and sustainable joint supplement, and see the difference in your pet's mobility.
1. Leave the wild in the wild
All of the green-lipped mussels in Antinol are farmed under very strict conditions. No mussels are wild-caught—natural populations are left in the wild.
Collecting wild mussels has a hugely negative environmental impact, as mussels are dredged from the seabed, disturbing wildlife and destroying whole ecosystems.
Our farmed mussels are grown on ropes suspended in the water. These are less invasive to the surrounding environment and more sustainable than other methods. In fact, the lines create shelter for other marine life and don’t impact migration routes or local currents.
2. Farming controls
Our green-lipped mussels are sustainably grown and harvested at the perfect time in the pure, pristine waters of Marlborough Sounds Marine Park in New Zealand.
70% of all mussels grown here are used exclusively in the production of Antinol®️.
Green-lipped mussel farming is regulated by the New Zealand Ministry of Primary Industries. Our mussel farms adhere to strict practices set by Aquaculture New Zealand's A+ sustainability programme.
Our farms have won two environmental certification awards from the Marine Farming Association.
The farms monitor the water quality in the marine park 24 hours a day, and runoff from the land is highly regulated to keep the coastal waters crystal clear.
3. Green-Lipped Mussel welfare
15-18 green-lipped mussels go into each Antinol capsule, but the welfare of the mussels themselves is of the utmost importance to us.
They are farmed in pristine waters, resulting in mussels in optimal health, having spent their lives in mussel luxury.
Once harvested, the mussels are euthanised in the most ethical way available. No toxic chemicals are used in the process—it is done simply and quickly via a very rapid application of extreme pressure increase and release.
Humane, effective and with no toxic waste or contaminants in the mussel tissues or the environment.
4. Recycled CO2
Antinol is unique. The oil is extracted using a super-critical CO2 extraction technique, producing a highly potent, proprietary oil blend.
Carbon dioxide is a greenhouse gas, and its release into the environment has a huge impact on global warming and climate change.
Our production technique recycles CO2—a bi-product of the gas industry.
Waste CO2 is captured at the gas plants and repurposed in our extraction process—stopping it from entering the atmosphere and contributing to global warming.
5. From rubbish to roadways
The entirety of the mussel’s meat is used in our production process, but Antinol does not contain any of the mussel shells. These can be reused in other products.
For example, some shells are crushed into a powder that is used as a base layer component in road building.
6. Transporting Antinol
All our green-lipped mussels are farmed in New Zealand to ensure the highest mussel quality for use in Antinol.
We believe the best quality mussels come ONLY from New Zealand, so we have to rely on shipping to get our capsules to your pet’s door.
The vast majority of our products are shipped by sea freight. Everything travels by boat where possible.
Shipping by plane creates 44 times more CO2 than sea shipping.
Sea freight is the more environmentally friendly option. It might take a little longer, but the benefits to the planet are worth the wait. We are constantly working towards improving our shipping network and innovating for sustainable change.
We know we’re not perfect yet, but we are striving toward a better, greener future. Taking care of our planet and ensuring everyone—from our farmers to our office staff and even the mussels—are treated fairly and ethically.
